Why AI is giving us sleepless nights?

Introduction

The last few years have given CEOs more sleepless nights than anything that came before. Organizations that weathered the pandemic and economic crises are now struggling to find a rhythm. Why the panic? We all know the answer: AI. Ever since the launch of ChatGPT, the world has been fundamentally different. More players followed, and the field is now crowded with frontier model providers powering the entire AI wave. It would also be a disservice not to mention the infrastructure giants behind them: Nvidia, Azure, AWS, and others.

Just writing an introduction pulls in more than ten companies. Go deeper, and you are looking at fifteen more companies and dozens of pieces of technical jargon. But do you have the patience for that? There is probably an AI chatbot open in another tab right now, and you could easily paste this article and ask it to summarize. But would it capture the tone? The nuance? And more practically: does a five-minute read even need summarizing? By the time you copy, paste, and wait for the response, you could have simply read it. The steps, the latency, and the energy consumed just do not add up.

This is exactly why most organizations fail at AI adoption. Adoption does not mean using Claude, GPT, or Gemini to solve a simple math problem or summarize a short article. It means understanding where and when to use AI, how to use it effectively, and having a strong why. Without that clarity, calculating an ROI on AI remains a fantasy.

From Homo Habilis to Homo Sapiens

As human beings, we share a history spanning millions of years of evolution. Studying this evolution leads to a clear conclusion: human consciousness and intelligence are its cornerstones. It started with a spark of fire, the rotation of the wheel, the agricultural revolution, the invention of electricity, and so on.

Now, technologists argue that an artificial intelligence with only a few decades of memory will replace the human intelligence that has shaped the world for millennia. The irony here is that artificial intelligence is itself the brainchild of human intelligence.

So, why the panic?

A World of Uncertainty

Whenever a new technology enters the market, the first thing it creates is panic. This stems from its inherent potential to replace human labor, either directly or indirectly. What makes AI a peculiar case is that it does not affect just one domain, industry, or country. The scope of AI is vast, affecting almost every living human being. In just a few years, it has rewired decades-old habits, such as how we search for information or reply to emails.

Think about content writers: just a few years ago, they were in huge demand. Now, their roles are highly endangered. Similarly, full-stack developers are being replaced by "vibe-coders," and traditional designers by "vibe-designers." This pattern extends across a massive number of professions.

While job displacement creates panic among employees, CEOs face a distinctly different set of threats:

  • Macroeconomic volatility
  • Cyber risks
  • Geopolitical conflicts
  • The rapid adoption of disruptive technologies
  • Profitability and sustainable growth

Today's CEOs are perplexed about where, how, and how much to invest. This investment is not just about capital; it involves energy and manpower as well.

The Root Cause of This Suffering

Let us examine the root cause of this suffering. You might be surprised by the term "suffering," but it is the most accurate way to describe it. This disruption has caused sleepless nights, financial losses, drained energy, and widespread anxiety.

The Buddha stated that desire is the root cause of suffering, and I agree. Ever since humanity discovered fire, our thirst to explore new frontiers has never been quenched. Desire has been the driving force behind our evolution. We did not stop with the invention of the wheel, nor did we settle with farming. We continued to discover new things every day, consistently replacing the old with the modern.

Innovation itself is not new to us, so why is this particular technological leap causing such panic? To understand this, we must look at the history of innovation.

  1. Survival & Security: It started with the invention of hunting weapons made from stone and wood. These tools enabled humankind to protect themself from predators and hunt for food.
  2. Mastery of Elements: Then came the greatest discovery, one that propelled hunters to another level: fire. Fire allowed humans to survive harsh winters, cook food, and protect themselves from the invasion of other animals they coexisted with.
  3. Stability: When constant migration became difficult and food sources grew uncertain due to weather and external factors, humans turned to agriculture. This provided the food security needed to survive.
  4. Knowledge & Philosophy: Metallurgy followed, and eventually, paper and writing. These innovations paved the way for documenting and spreading knowledge. Philosophers began to question human existence and purpose, alongside scientists who challenged established doctrines and investigated the nature of the Earth, matter, gravity, light, speed, and time.
  5. The Modern Age: These inquiries paved the way for innovations that are still with us today, rapidly changing human life. These include vaccines, steam engines, combustion engines, electricity, the telephone, nuclear power, and airplanes.

Some innovations were stifled, while others were accelerated by subsequent wars. When the great wars ended and humanity focused on improving its livelihood, these innovations were iterated, optimized, and perfected over time.

Once humans solved most of their physical challenges, they began searching for solutions to computational problems. This is how the computer was invented. Computers were continuously iterated upon and now exist in multiple forms. You are likely reading this article on one right now, perhaps your mobile phone.

So, returning to the cause of suffering: it is humanity's unquenchable desire for improvement and novelty. If this answer feels a bit vague, let us explore further in the next section.

Have You Ever Questioned the Nature of Your Identity?

The innovations mentioned above drastically improved our quality of life. They provided security, made travel easier, and allowed humans to express, document, and pass down their thoughts to the next generation.

For organizations and governments, these innovations allowed them to expand their reach. Weapons made governments stronger, vehicles optimized supply chains, and computers helped store, retrieve, and process massive volumes of data in minimal physical space. Then came corporations that focused on improving the computational power of these machines through architectural changes and semiconductor fabrication processes.

The invention of the World Wide Web ultimately connected all of these siloed data systems. This prompted the human mind to ask one question: What should we do with this data? Initially, it was used to make informed decisions.

Humans have always desired a coexisting entity to help them perform their tasks. This desire dates back thousands of years to the use of domestic animals, then tragically to human slavery, and more recently, to modern automation machines. This foundational desire set the stage for the emergence of Artificial Intelligence. We began to ask: What if human intelligence could be replicated in a machine?

Discoveries in neuroscience led computer scientists to a groundbreaking theory. If the human brain is essentially a collection of memories, experiences, and interconnected neurons, perhaps they could feed similar data into a computer, allowing it to learn and reproduce intelligence.

It started with simple math problems, chess strategies, and content suggestions on social media. The most serious shift, however, occurred when OpenAI introduced GPT to the public. Skills like summarizing, creating, editing, and modifying content suddenly became endangered, as artificial intelligence could perform them better and in a fraction of the time. This capability quickly extended to image generation, and then to coding. Today, these models have been tuned and optimized to the point where they frequently outperform their creator: human intelligence.

So, have you ever questioned the nature of your identity?

Who are we? What makes us separate beings when compared to other living organisms or the tools we invent? What is the difference between our biological ancestors and us? What differentiates a human from a vehicle or a computer?

It is not our physical abilities. It is our consciousness. It is our intelligence. All the innovations of humankind have been our brainchild. Now, the next blog or social media post you read could very well be the brainchild of an AI model.

It was, is, and always will be our intelligence and consciousness that differentiate us from the rest of the animal kingdom and the machines we build. Until now, no animal or innovation in the history of human existence has ever challenged the very core of our identity.

Conclusion

Do you see the reason why we are having these sleepless nights? It is because machines have started reasoning. Reasoning was supposed to be your task, my purpose, a CEO’s identity, a content writer’s lifeblood, and a coder’s daily bread. We can extend this to any persona, because AI is everywhere. Even your dishwasher uses AI to ensure your glassware does not break.
